About The Big Gay Picnic
Everything you wanted to know about the picnic, probably a few things you didn’t, and the important stuff that helps keep our community welcoming, fun, and easy to join.
The Big Gay Picnic is a recurring community gathering in Balboa Park created to give LGBTQIA+ people, friends, families, and allies a relaxed place to connect in person.
It is intentionally casual: bring a chair or blanket, something to share if you can, and spend an afternoon meeting people without the pressure of a bar, club, or formal event.
Everyone is welcome.
The picnic was created with the LGBTQIA+ community in mind, but you do not have to be gay, queer, single, partnered, young, old, or anything else in particular to attend. Friends, families, allies, and friendly humans are welcome.
Yes. The Big Gay Picnic is a free community event.
Donations and sponsorships help us cover supplies, equipment, entertainment, and other event expenses, but there is no admission charge.
Absolutely.
Plenty of people arrive without knowing anyone. One of the reasons the picnic exists is to make it easier to meet people in a low-pressure setting.
A picnic blanket or chair, sunscreen, water, and anything else that makes an afternoon in the park comfortable.
If you would like to participate in the potluck, bring something shareable. Games, umbrellas, coolers, and other picnic supplies are welcome too.
No. Bringing food is encouraged, but nobody is turned away because they arrived empty-handed.
The picnic is community-supported, so people who can bring food, beverages, ice, supplies, or make a small donation help make the event better for everyone.
Yes. Friends, family members, kids, and well-behaved pets are welcome.
Pet owners are responsible for keeping animals under control and cleaning up after them. Please also be mindful that not everyone is comfortable around animals.
No RSVP is normally required.
Check the Events page before heading out for the current date, time, theme, location information, and any special notices.
Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and like yourself. Casual clothes, swimwear, leather, fetish-inspired clothing, pup hoods, furry costumes, and other expressive looks are all welcome at the picnic.
Just remember that we are outdoors in Balboa Park, often in warm weather and direct sun. If your outfit includes heavy leather, fur, masks, hoods, or full costumes, please plan for heat, hydration, shade, and breaks.
Because the picnic takes place in a public City park, clothing still has to comply with laws that apply to public spaces. San Diego Municipal Code §56.53 prohibits public nudity in public parks, so outfits should maintain the required opaque coverage of areas defined by the ordinance.
Beyond that, expressive, queer, playful, sexy, campy, kinky, sporty, or downright fabulous is completely fine with us.
Parking conditions around Balboa Park can change, so the Location page is the best place to check current parking information before each picnic.
Give yourself a little extra time on busy park weekends.
If a picnic must be canceled or significantly changed, the website and event information will be updated with the current status.

We generally provide a full small-event PA and live-sound setup for performers, DJs, announcements, and community programming. Exact equipment may vary from picnic to picnic, but our typical package includes:
- Main PA: two powered 15-inch main speakers, plus additional powered delay / satellite speakers as needed for coverage.
- Stage monitors: two 8-inch powered monitors.
- Mixing: digital live-sound mixing with multiple inputs, monitor mixes, and live engineer support.
- Microphones: Shure QLXD handheld wireless microphones.
- Instrument connections: stereo DI boxes and line-level inputs for acoustic instruments, keyboards, DJ equipment, and similar sources.
- DJ Services: DDJ-FLX10 4-deck digital DJ controller.
- Support: cabling, power distribution, setup, soundcheck, live mixing, and performer changeovers.
We can accommodate solo performers, acoustic acts, DJs, and many small bands, but performers should contact us in advance with their stage plot, input list, monitor needs, and any special technical requirements.
Backline is not guaranteed. Drum kits, amplifiers, instrument stands, specialty hardware, and performer-specific gear should be discussed with us ahead of time rather than assumed to be available.
Our outdoor setup also has to stay within the conditions of our City park permit, so unusually large, loud, or power-intensive setups may require advance coordination or may not be possible.
