What is it?
The Big Gay Picnic is a monthly hangout in Balboa Park for LGBTQIA+ people in the San Diego community and their friends.
We create a free, accessible, sober-friendly, community-centered public gathering that reduces isolation, supports our local community, fosters inclusion, and provides charitable community benefits in San Diego.
Come as you are, bring something for the potluck, and just share space with real people in the sunshine. This is your time to connect with others and yourself, one sunny Sunday at a time.
It is totally free, fun, and open to everyone.
WHY?
Why are we doing this?
We are doing this because we all need more moments where queerness feels ordinary, safe, and shared. We also need to be visible to each other and to the wider community. Hanging out should be free, open, and just… nice!
Pride should not be once a year – it should be a habit.
When?
Time
We host our events on Sunday every month, except December and January. The picnic starts at 11am and lasts until 3pm. Check our Events page for upcoming dates.
Where?
Location
We have a great, central spot in Balboa Park that you can easily reach from Hillcrest. We’re located in the Cypress Grove picnic area at the corner of Balboa & Quince Drive where you can relax in the sun, enjoy lawn games, and some trees for shade.

Why Gay?
Why is it called the Big “Gay” Picnic?
Originally, the picnic was conceived to fill a specific void in the gay community. This is where the name comes from. But that does not mean that you have to be gay to attend! Whether you are lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, intersex or an ally, EVERYONE is welcome.
